The tallest volcano in Indonesia erupted on Sunday, sending clouds of ash into the sky and a river of lava across the topography of the island that is home to the majority of the nation's population.

The lava dome at the top of Mount Semeru, which rises 12,060 feet above sea level at its highest point, was eroded and collapsed as a result of monsoon rains, according to a report published on Sunday by The Associated Press.

According to a National Disaster Management Agency spokeswoman who talked to the AP, the eruption happened after the lava dome collapsed.

In a quick update on Mount Semeru's eruption published on Sunday, the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management stated that volcanic activity started at 0344 UTC+7 and that volcanic ash from hot cloud avalanches was noticed around ten minutes later.

According to the agency's first study, the volcano was within 10 kilometers of an estimated 61,024 individuals, 15,256 houses, and 162 million USD of infrastructure that was likely to be impacted. Additionally, it stated that there are no densely populated areas between 10 to 30 kilometers of the volcano.

According to the AP, as the lava advanced toward a river, ash was being blasted approximately 5,000 feet into the air.

Although the sun was obscured and villages were buried in ash, no fatalities had been reported.

In December 2021, Semeru last erupted, killing 51 people in mud-covered towns.

More than 10,000 people had to be rescued from their homes, and hundreds of them sustained burn injuries.

More over 270 million people live in the archipelago of Indonesia. Due to fault lines and tectonic plates, the region, which is a component of the Pacific Ocean's
